This winter 2025 as we study the Book of Jeremiah on Sunday mornings, we are reminded over and over again that poor leadership brings disaster upon a nation. If the leaders – political and spiritual – are not following the Lord God and obeying his ways, troubles and difficulties for that people loom ahead. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord!
This is important for us as a nation. We have coming up on Monday, January 20, the transfer of power and the inauguration of our new president. Whether we are excited about our new leader or filled with uncertainty, the Scriptures make it clear what is our role in this leadership change: We are to be a people of prayer!
Paul instructs us in his letter to Timothy what we should do:
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.
1 Timothy 2:1-3
We must be people who pray regularly for our president, congress and all our leaders. Praying that God would endow them with wisdom, so that we might live in peace and be able to live out our faith in Jesus Christ. Let us as a church commit ourselves to praying for our leaders to follow the ways of the Lord.
